Hello! I am Asha Scott, the Founder of Her Homes Housing and Resources. I am so grateful you are reading my story and checking out HER Homes Housing and Resources. Being chosen by God to birth such a ministry, I appreciate you for taking the time to be here! I just want to share a little bit about myself and my passion for the community and the heart to drive change in our lower-class communities. Here's my story:

I was born in Gary, Indiana, to my mother, Patricia, and my father, Larry. My mother went through some health issues while pregnant with me, and I was born premature. While my mom recovered, my aunt, my mom's younger sister, took care of me. She named me Asha, and when my mother came home from the hospital, she gave me my middle name. My mom was my world, raising me with compassionate love and care. She was the first person I met who loved me like she did. My whole world shook with my mother’s untimely death in September 1997 when I was just 10 years old. The loss was tough for me, marking a turning point in my young life that I struggled to comprehend. I often dealt with nightmares and flashbacks of my mother being there. Learning to cope, I was then sent to California to begin a new life.

After my mother's passing, I moved to Woodland Hills, California, to live with my aunt and uncle. They welcomed me into their home and raised me in the church, focusing on education and instilling everlasting morals. Morning Bible study was a staple of my childhood. My aunt devoted her mornings to making our lunches and spent the rest of her day in church and at work. She had many similarities to my mom, such as determination and hustle. My uncle was also an entrepreneur who taught us the values of faith in God, support in our sporting activities, and played a significant role in shaping my future. My aunt and uncle loved me so much, and I thank God today for the opportunity they gave me and a second chance at life. My teenage years were marked by a struggle with self-esteem and the heavy burden of grief. I never fully understood what I was feeling until later in my life, but I always held on to hope and the desire to keep going.

As a teenager, feelings of inadequacy often taunted me, pushing me to create false narratives to fit in with my peers. Navigating adolescence while grappling with loss was incredibly challenging. However, these experiences taught me resilience and the importance of being true to myself. I started to embrace my role as the "comfort friend" and the one who brought a smile to the room. I graduated from Thoreau High School with my diploma and went on to college in Columbia, South Carolina. At 19, I left Allen University in search of my dad and his family. I became a mother at 19, believing that love and relationships would help me discover my identity. My journey through young motherhood was tough, including failed relationships and homelessness. I moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to try and stabilize myself closer to my dad's side of the family. Faced with instability due to an inability to afford housing for my two children, we often had to move after staying at apartments for 4 to 8 months. I sought out programs designed to assist women and mothers, which ultimately helped me regain my footing. I had my daughter at 25 in Minnesota. My children and I then moved back to Los Angeles to be closer to my daughter's father and try to work on our family. By the age of 29, I was tired of the back-and-forth twists and turns of life in California. I prayed that God would send me help and guidance on what to do and how to live. A family member came to California and told me about Texas and the opportunities available there. I felt encouraged and hopeful that God had answered my prayers by sending help and understanding for my next step. After much prayer, in 2016, leaping out in faith, my two children, two dogs, and I moved to McKinney, Texas. We were on the path of new beginnings.

Having grown accustomed to independence and struggling to trust others, I turned to my foundation in Christ. Despite my many mistakes, nothing fulfilled me like His love. His grace propelled me toward my purpose of helping others and creating options for girls and women to have stability in their lives and become successful individuals. Helping others and guiding them to find their purpose in Christ became my new norm. I turned to my faith, which was a steadfast pillar emphasized by my aunt and uncle throughout my upbringing. Their unwavering support and the foundation of faith they provided helped me gradually build confidence and a sense of self-worth.

In 2014, I founded my nonprofit, Divas Build Futures Inc., to mentor, empower, and uplift girls and women in self-esteem, confidence, and grief. Moving to Texas in 2016 was a vital step in my faith, enabling me to change my life and assist others in doing the same. I have a firm belief that one's environment is a crucial part of their growth. The challenges I faced with homelessness fueled my passion for becoming a homeless advocate, leading to the creation of Her Homes Housing and Resources. I envisioned a space where individuals could find the support, compassion, and resources necessary to overcome their obstacles. Her Homes Housing represents not only my journey but also serves as a beacon of hope for those who have faced adversity.

Today, I am a healed wife, mother, mentor, entrepreneur, and friend. My aim and ultimate goal in life are to honor God by giving back to His people and loving them as He loved me. I strive to help others understand forgiveness and perseverance. I want to embody the best version of myself that God intended for me.

In November 2023, I established Her Homes to restore lives and rekindle hope in communities that have lost their way. My name, A'sha, signifies hope, and I aspire to build a community where individuals recognize their worth and believe they can overcome their challenges. As I continue this journey, I am dedicated to expanding Her Homes Housing to assist boys and young men to ensure everyone has the opportunity to thrive. I pray that together we can create a supportive environment where stability and independence are achievable for all. I hope the world witnesses the transformative power of faith and how God can truly change lives. This is my story.
